Three passports, one table<\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

This is the long way of explaining why our kitchen has three spice racks, why the phone rings at odd hours across time zones, and why “home” was never one place \u2014 it was always the people. 01<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1969 \u2014 Willamette Valley, Oregon<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oregon beginnings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Robert Nolan grew up on a hazelnut farm outside Salem, the fourth of five kids in a house that never quite had enough chairs at dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He learned early that a full table mattered more than a full pantry \u2014 a lesson he’d carry across two oceans.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

1991\u20131997 \u2014 Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Freiburg years<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A scholarship sent Robert to the Black Forest to study forestry. He meant to stay one year; he stayed six, and never quite left the German language behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was in a Freiburg lecture hall that he met Ingrid Bauer, whose family had farmed vineyards along the Rhine for four generations.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Turning Point<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1998: the move that started everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Robert and Ingrid packed two suitcases and one crate of books for a research post in Chengdu \u2014 a decision that would quietly rewrite the family tree for the next three generations.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

1998 \u2014 Chengdu, Sichuan Province<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting in Chengdu<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At a language exchange in a teahouse near Wenshu Monastery, Ingrid met Li Mei, a translator who would later become her closest friend \u2014 and, in time, her daughter-in-law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mei’s family had lived in Chengdu for as long as anyone could trace. The two women taught each other recipes before they taught each other words.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2005 onward \u2014 Portland, Oregon<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three-passport household<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When Robert and Ingrid’s son David married Mei’s daughter, Lin, in 2009, the household officially became trilingual \u2014 and gloriously over-documented at every border crossing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday dinners now rotate between sauerkraut, dumplings, and David’s stubborn attempts at Pacific Northwest barbecue.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Today \u2014 Portland, with visits everywhere<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The youngest Nolans grow up counting in three languages and asking, without irony, which grandmother’s version of dumplings is correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every summer the whole family reassembles somewhere new \u2014 Freiburg one year, Chengdu the next \u2014 proof that home was never a single address.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
